HP ProCurve has been quietly supporting the networking needs of the hospitality industry for many years. Numerous resorts, hotel chains, and boutiques in Asia Pacific and Japan (APJ) rely on our wireless and wired networking solutions.
In China, The Venetian Macao uses an HP ProCurve network to run one of the world’s biggest casinos. The gargantuan complex, which cost more than US$2 billion to build, boasts 3,000 hotel suites along with extensive convention and exhibition space, retail space, leading restaurants, deluxe spa, and a six-floor casino.
To run this massive operation, the Venetian Macao has installed more than 1,500 ProCurve switches, including the 5400zl, 3500yl, 5300xl, 2800, and 2600 series; ProCurve Manager Plus (PCM+) 2.2 network management software and the ProCurve Identity Driven Manager (IDM) 2.1 plug-in; and more than 1,000 ProCurve radio ports for wireless local area networking (WLAN).
The Venetian Macao is using its ProCurve network in all aspects of its gaming and hospitality functions. The mega-resort relies on the ProCurve network to improve customer experiences; sustain maximum network uptime; support emerging convergence applications such as video surveillance, VoIP, and multimedia; provide wireless coverage throughout the complex; simplify network management; and be scalable for future expansions in size and in types of applications.

In Malaysia, Shangri-La’s Rasa Sayang Resort and Spa is using a unified wired and wireless HP ProCurve network to deliver gigabit speed, support VLAN segmentation, provide wireless connectivity for resort guests, and consolidate three existing physical networks into one. Two ProCurve core switches – the 5400 Series and 5300 Series with Wireless Edge Services Module – perform core switch functions. Twenty-four ProCurve 2600 Series switches were deployed at the network edge and 12 Radio Ports were installed for wireless coverage.
“Guests are enjoying their wireless connectivity,” said Ho Cheng Soon, IT manager at the Rasa Sayang Resort. “The design of our infrastructure using ProCurve wireless access points provide high-speed and robust connections, and ensures that guests do not lose their connectivity as they move about different parts of the resort.”
Shangri-La’s Rasa Sayang Resort and Spa has also reaped the benefits of improved network reliability and easy network management from having a unified wired and wireless infrastructure. VLAN segmentation and the consolidation of the three previous physical networks into one provides for greater efficiency in the IT department.
ProCurve’s lifetime warranty♦ is also a compelling value proposition and major benefit for the resort, which aimed to get the best value out of its IT investment budget. “ProCurve’s lifetime warranty♦ is a valuable advantage in containing the cost of investment and network maintenance,” said Ho. “It does not imply that the ProCurve products are not reliable. On the contrary, the lifetime warranty♦ is even more valuable because it is offered by such a reputable vendor such as HP ProCurve.”

New hospitality solutions
Organizations throughout APJ can now benefit from innovative technologies – such as the recently announced HP ProCurve MSM317 Access Device – that are spawning new opportunities for the hospitality industry.
The MSM317 offers a revolutionary way for hospitality and residential properties to implement ‘quad play’ services. By integrating an 802.11b/g wireless access point and a four-port wired Ethernet switch, the MSM317 connects multiple IP-based devices, such as VoIP telephones, televisions, and other hotel room equipment. And because it is installed in a standard wall electrical outlet and delivers integrated Power over Ethernet (PoE) support, the MSM317 eliminates the need for additional power sourcing equipment.
Of the properties with which we have spoken, most are planning to use the MSM317 for guest rooms and conference areas. For in-room deployments, many will use the four Ethernet ports in this manner:
While many are choosing to leave the fourth port open for future flexibility and use, some have considered using it for temperature, lighting, and drapery control.
MSM317 access devices are easily and remotely managed by any HP ProCurve MultiService Mobility controller. Two new controllers give centralized management and consistent services anywhere on the network, allowing hospitality customers to implement security, roaming, and quality of service policies.
“Property owners and network operators can deliver multiple high-value voice, video, and data services to guests and other occupants with these new solutions,” said Roger Sands, director, Worldwide Mobility Solutions, HP ProCurve. “These converged network offerings extend HP ProCurve’s product portfolio into a new category of innovative network edge products that help customers reduce the complexity of installing and managing their wired and wireless network services.”
